Disconnected brake hose blamed for Arlington train derailment

A disconnected hose in the braking system between two railroad cars is being blamed for February's train derailment in downtown Arlington.Around lunchtime Feb. 17, five tankers of corn syrup and two empty boxcars on the 125-car Union Pacific train jumped the track near City Hall and several businesses.No one was injured, and none of the train's hazardous cargo spilled, but the derailment just east of Mesquite Street between Division and Abram streets shut down several key thoroughfares and snarled traffic for hours.This week, Union Pacific representatives told City Council members that a hose in the train's air brake system somehow became disconnected between the seventh and eighth cars, which caused the emergency brakes to activate.

"The sudden stop occurred while half the train was going down a hill and the other half was going over the hill," said Raquel Espinoza-Williams, a Union Pacific spokeswoman. "Unfortunately, we had a scenario that had all the necessary gravitational forces to cause the cars to come off the tracks."The train had been inspected before it left the rail yard, Espinoza-Williams said.The basic hardwood flooring would suffice. The features included in the basic product is the water proof and anti termite covering. This is important since most homes experience water leaks, floods and termites."The hose had to be connected for the train to depart," she said. "It's just something that happened while the train was en route. We're not sure what caused the hose to separate."
